Former federal prosecutors strengthen the firm's trial, investigations, and fraud recovery platform

Robins Kaplan LLP announced today the expansion of its fraud, investigations, and recovery capabilities through the addition of four former federal prosecutors—Allen Slaughter, Lauren Roso, Carla Baumel, and Bahram Samie—whose collective experience strengthens the firm's ability to investigate and try complex fraud and enforcement matters.

Increasingly, companies, boards, investors, and other stakeholders are pursuing affirmative strategies to investigate misconduct, recover losses, and address complex fraud-related disputes.

These additions build on a growing area of the firm's litigation platform, combining Robins Kaplan's national trial reputation with prosecutor-informed investigative judgment and experience in complex civil enforcement matters. The team will work across the firm's business litigation, government and internal investigations, healthcare, antitrust, intellectual property, and technology practices to help clients identify misconduct, pursue civil remedies, and navigate parallel enforcement and litigation risk.

Slaughter, Roso, Baumel, and Samie bring significant experience from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota and other government roles, where they led high-stakes investigations, trials, and appeals involving False Claims Act and healthcare fraud, antitrust, public corruption, civil rights enforcement, RICO, organized crime, controlled substances, national security-related matters, and issues related to emerging technologies.

“Allen, Lauren, Carla, and Bahram are outstanding trial lawyers and investigators whose experience matches the complexity of the issues clients are facing today,” said Anthony Froio, Chair of the Executive Board and Managing Partner at Robins Kaplan. “They deepen our ability to help clients respond to investigations, assess risk, build cases, and take high-stakes matters through trial.”

The four attorneys join a bench of former government leaders and trial lawyers that includes former U.S. Attorneys B. Todd Jones, Brendan Johnson, and Timothy Purdon.

“Robins Kaplan already had a strong national trial platform and an established investigations practice,” said B. Todd Jones, former U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota and Partner at Robins Kaplan. "These additions give us even greater ability to build cases with the discipline of former federal prosecutors and the flexibility of a private litigation firm—whether we are defending clients, conducting investigations, or pursuing affirmative fraud claims."

Allen Slaughter

Allen Slaughter joins the firm’s Business Litigation and Government & Internal Investigations practices after nearly 16 years with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota, where he most recently served as Deputy Chief of the Narcotics & Indian Country Section.

Slaughter handled all phases of federal criminal investigations and prosecutions involving public corruption, healthcare fraud, firearms offenses, controlled substances, and complex conspiracy matters. He also served on the trial team in United States v. Chauvin et al. Prior to his public service career, Slaughter practiced at Robins Kaplan, representing clients in complex business litigation, white collar defense, antitrust, and patent matters.

Lauren Roso

Lauren Roso joins the firm’s Civil Rights and Business Litigation groups, bringing federal trial, appellate, and investigations experience to civil rights matters, complex disputes, government investigations, and enforcement risk.

As an Assistant U.S. Attorney and Senior Litigation Counsel, Roso prosecuted complex narcotics trafficking, money laundering, violent crime, and national security-related matters, while supervising trial teams and leading attorney training initiatives. Before entering public service, she represented clients facing government and internal investigations in private practice.

Carla Baumel

Carla Baumel joins the firm’s Intellectual Property & Technology group, bringing experience at the intersection of technology, antitrust, investigations, and complex litigation.

As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Baumel led investigations involving organized criminal enterprises and emerging artificial intelligence-related issues and tried complex multi-defendant RICO matters. Before joining the Department of Justice, she handled multidistrict antitrust litigation involving technology, healthcare, and pharmaceutical companies as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Colorado. Her background in biology and intellectual property law positions her to advise clients navigating sophisticated technology and life sciences disputes.

Bahram Samie

Bahram Samie joins the firm’s Government & Internal Investigations and Business Litigation practices after serving as Deputy Civil Chief of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota.

Samie handled matters involving healthcare fraud, False Claims Act enforcement, government procurement fraud, civil rights investigations, and Controlled Substances Act enforcement. His work included negotiating court-enforceable consent decrees and leading investigations into unconstitutional policing, housing discrimination, and disability discrimination. His public service earned multiple honors, including the Department of Justice Assistant Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award and recognition by Minnesota Lawyer as an Attorney of the Year.

Together, Slaughter, Roso, Baumel, and Samie reflect Robins Kaplan's continued investment in trial excellence, investigations, and complex disputes. Their arrival expands the firm's ability to help clients investigate misconduct, navigate enforcement risk, pursue civil remedies, and prepare complex matters for trial.
