Robins Kaplan recently welcomed four attorneys whose careers in public service shaped how they approach advocacy, strategy, and trial work: Allen Slaughter, Bahram Samie, Lauren Roso, and Carla Baumel.
Though their practices span intellectual property, civil rights, business litigation, and government investigations, all four attorneys share a common foundation forged through years at the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota. Their collective experience includes prosecuting violent crime, litigating complex civil rights and fraud matters, leading sensitive investigations, and trying cases involving significant financial, reputational, and personal stakes.

Allen Slaughter: Insight from the Courtroom
Allen Slaughter returns to Robins Kaplan after nearly 16 years with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota, most recently serving as Deputy Chief of the Narcotics & Indian Country Section. Over the course of his career as a federal prosecutor, he handled all stages of criminal prosecution, from investigations and charging decisions through trial and post-conviction litigation.
His work spanned controlled substance and firearms offenses, public corruption, healthcare fraud, violent crime, and complex conspiracy matters. He also served on the trial team in United States v. Chauvin et al., one of the most closely watched federal prosecutions in recent history. His work resulted in several honors, including the Attorney General’s David Margolis Award for Exceptional Service – the highest DOJ award that can be given.
That experience now informs his work representing clients facing government investigations, internal investigations, regulatory scrutiny, and complex litigation.
“Our society is at multiple crossroads, as artificial intelligence and other technologies continue to reshape industries, while at the same time government enforcement and business litigation are becoming increasingly more dynamic,” Slaughter said. “The legal practice must adapt to address these new and complex challenges.”
“I help clients navigate this evolving landscape by applying established legal principles to emerging issues, delivering practical guidance, and advocating for effective solutions. If necessary, those solutions may need to be in the courtroom. Drawing on almost sixteen years of courtroom experience as a federal prosecutor coupled with prior years in the civil realm, I guide clients through various challenges from investigations and enforcement proceedings to civil fraud and regulatory inquiries, all to help them protect their interests and achieve successful outcomes,” he added.
Before entering public service, Slaughter previously practiced at Robins Kaplan, where he handled complex business litigation, white collar defense, antitrust matters, and patent disputes. His return to the firm reflects a full-circle moment in a career defined by courtroom advocacy and public service.
Bahram Samie: Guiding Clients Through Government Scrutiny
Before joining Robins Kaplan, Bahram Samie served as Deputy Civil Chief of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota, where he handled matters involving healthcare fraud, government procurement fraud, and civil rights enforcement.
His work included investigations into unconstitutional policing, disability discrimination, housing discrimination, and violations of the Controlled Substances Act. He also played a leading role in False Claims Act litigation and negotiated multiple court-enforceable consent decrees addressing systemic discriminatory conduct.
That combination of civil enforcement and complex litigation experience now informs his practice representing clients in government investigations, civil rights matters, and high-stakes business disputes.
“We have embarked on a new era of government scrutiny, with unprecedented intersectionality of civil rights and fraud enforcement,” Samie said. “I look upon my fifteen years of experience at the United States Attorney’s Office to help clients navigate this changing landscape, protect their interests when responding to government inquiries, and receive fair treatment in investigations and enforcement proceedings.”
Samie’s work earned him multiple honors during his public service career, including the Department of Justice Assistant Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award and recognition by Minnesota Lawyer as an “Attorney of the Year.”
Lauren Roso: Advocating for Accountability
Lauren Roso brings extensive courtroom and investigative experience to Robins Kaplan’s civil rights and litigation practice. During her tenure with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota, she prosecuted complex narcotics trafficking, money laundering, violent crime, and national security matters, while also serving as Senior Litigation Counsel supervising trial teams and training attorneys.
Today, she focuses her practice on civil rights matters involving police misconduct, excessive force, and jail and prison abuse, drawing on her experience working alongside law enforcement while remaining deeply focused on accountability and advocacy.
“During my time at the Department, I fought for justice. At Robins, I continue that fight against the very systems of power that are supposed to uphold it,” Roso said. “Now, perhaps more than ever, it is important to hold state actors accountable for their wrongdoings and show that no one is above the law.”
Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Roso worked in private practice advising non-profits, professional organizations, and sophisticated corporate clients facing government and internal investigations, giving her perspective on both sides of complex disputes.
Carla Baumel: Navigating Emerging Technologies
Carla Baumel joins the firm’s Intellectual Property & Technology group with a unique blend of technical fluency and federal trial experience. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, she led high-profile investigations involving organized criminal enterprises and the illicit use of emerging AI technologies, while also trying complex multi-defendant RICO cases.
Prior to her federal service, Baumel worked on multidistrict antitrust litigation involving major technology, healthcare, and pharmaceutical companies as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Colorado.
Her background positions her at the intersection of technology and litigation — an increasingly important area for clients facing sophisticated intellectual property and business disputes.
“As AI and other emerging technologies continue to evolve faster than the legal frameworks that govern them, lawyers must be able to adapt quickly, apply established legal principles in new ways, and communicate complex issues with clarity and precision. Helping clients meet those challenges through creative problem-solving and tireless advocacy is one of the most rewarding aspects of my practice,” Baumel said.
With a background in biology and intellectual property law, Baumel is particularly skilled at distilling highly technical issues into persuasive courtroom narratives, a skill that has become increasingly valuable as emerging technologies continue to reshape litigation.
