Science Advisors

To best protect and defend innovation in litigation, we know that our clients need representation that combines courtroom mastery with deep technical expertise. Over the last two decades, Robins Kaplan LLP has cultivated an in-house team of science advisors to help us stay at the forefront of technology and the fast-evolving IP litigation landscape. Our team holds degrees--mostly Ph.D.’s--spanning a wide range of scientific disciplines. This depth enables us to delve into the science at the base of our clients’ technologies. Since underlying science permeates patent cases and other intellectual property matters, our in-house scientists provide technical assistance and insight at every stage of representation in complex IP cases, monetization of IP assets, and trade-secret protection. They assist with matters as diverse as:

  • Early-case assessment
  • Patent-claim analysis
  • Forensic analysis
  • Inspection of source code
  • Preparation of expert witnesses
  • Creation of trial exhibits
  • Drafting summary judgments, technical briefs, and inventor declarations

Many of our science advisors are registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as patent agents. On behalf of our clients, they also work alongside our attorneys to educate and present intricate issues, help translate complex technology, and communicate the legal implications of conclusions into terms judges and juries can understand. Our scientists are also tapped for their unique perspective when developing case strategy, including claim-construction strategy, discovery strategy, and trial strategy.  At the same time, they provide our clients and attorneys access to conflict-free, readily accessible scientific perspectives.
