$2 Billion Jury Verdict in Favor of Couple Diagnosed with Cancer After Long Term Roundup Use

May 14, 2019

On May 13, 2019, a jury in Oakland, California, awarded Alva and Alberta Pilliod $2 billion in damages. The couple had sprayed Roundup weed killer on their properties for more than 30 years. In 2011, Alva was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). In 2015, Alberta was diagnosed with NHL. NHL is a form of cancer that scientific studies have linked to Roundup and its active ingredient, glyphosate.

At trial, Monsanto, which was recently acquired by Bayer, argued that there was no scientific evidence that Roundup could cause cancer. The attorneys representing the Pilliods presented the jury with a number of scientific studies supporting the link as well as experts who disagreed with Monsanto’s assessment of its herbicide. Internal company documents presented at trial also suggested Monsanto employees were concerned for many years about the genotoxicity of Roundup. A toxicologist testifying on behalf of the couple repeatedly stated that Monsanto made “dumb” assumptions when it tested Roundup’s safety.

Attorneys estimate there may be as many as 14,000 cases involving individuals alleging NHL and related cancer injuries from Roundup use. Cases have been filed across the United States.
