Two Attorneys Recognized as Euromoney’s Americas Rising Stars

September 16, 2019

Robins Kaplan LLP is pleased to announce that Euromoney has selected attorneys Patrick Arenz and Aaron Fahrenkrog as winners of Euromoney’s 2019 Americas Rising Stars awards. The awards celebrate the achievements of attorneys under 40 who are leading the field in legal sectors across the Americas.

Patrick Arenz – Winner for Best in Litigation: Trial Lawyer

Patrick Arenz is a trial lawyer who handles high-stakes disputes for a diverse set of clients, ranging from Fortune 100 companies to small inventor-led companies and individuals. His practice focuses on patent and copyright infringement matters, trade secret misappropriation, breach of contract disputes, and business and individual tort cases. In five separate patent enforcement efforts for inventor-led companies, he has secured eight-figure licensing revenues for each client.

Most recently, he served as co-lead trial counsel in Covidien v. Esch, in which a federal jury in the District of Massachusetts held the defendant, a former Covidien employee, liable for breaching his contracts with Covidien by disclosing and using confidential information to start his own company. Patrick also recently tried and won what is believed to be the first civil jury verdict in a sex tourism case, in which a federal jury awarded $950,000 to a survivor of sexual assault for an assault that took place in Laos by a U.S. citizen.

Aaron Fahrenkrog – Winner for Case of the Year

Aaron Fahrenkrog, a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property and Technology Group, represents both plaintiffs and defendants in all aspects of patent enforcement and monetization, from initial portfolio strategy and evaluation through licensing negotiations, litigation, trial, and appeal. In the matter recognized as “Case of the Year,” ATI v. Iancu, Aaron represented ATI in a complex patent litigation matter that arose out of a dispute between ATI and LG over 3D graphics rendering technology. The question at issue was whether ATI was the first to invent the technologies claimed in three of its patents, and whether it showed diligence in building the inventions and bringing its applications to the patent office. The case went against ATI at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), which canceled the claims of all three patents. On appeal, Aaron represented ATI as lead counsel before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, where the matter was ultimately resolved when the court reversed in favor of ATI. Instead of merely vacating the PTAB’s judgment and directing it to apply the correct legal standard, the Federal Circuit reversed the PTAB’s judgment in its entirety as to all three patents.

The awards were announced at a ceremony in New York City on September 12. To see the complete list of honorees, click here.
