Matt Byers has spent his entire legal career representing clients in insurance and reinsurance litigation. Matt has represented clients through every stage of litigation, from performing coverage analysis, pre-suit evaluations, initiating suits, and aggressively pursuing discovery, through summary judgment and trials and arbitration. He has represented clients of all sizes ranging from local direct side insurers to multi-national reinsurers.
Prior to joining Robins Kaplan, Matt was an associate at Choate, Hall & Stewart where he focused on both reinsurance and IP litigation. Prior to that, Matt earned his law degree at the Georgetown University Law Center. Matt has represented his clients in a wide range of jurisdictions, including the District of Massachusetts, the District of Delaware, and the Southern District of New York. He has also litigated confidential arbitrations seated in Massachusetts, New York, and Bermuda.
Represented international commercial reinsurer in arbitration concerning cessions stemming from widespread winter storm losses. Matt was involved in all aspects of the dispute throughout the conclusion of arbitration, resulting in a favorable award from the arbitration panel. (Prior to joining Robins Kaplan LLP)
Represented large domestic reinsurer in multi-phase confidential arbitration disputing millions of dollars of overbillings stemming from construction defect claims, resulting in favorable interim decisions from the arbitration panel. (Prior to joining Robins Kaplan LLP)
Represented international commercial reinsurer in confidential arbitration seeking payment of reinsurance claims stemming from Hurricane Harvey, resulting in favorable settlement for the client. (Prior to joining Robins Kaplan LLP)
Represented Momenta Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in patent infringement dispute against Amphastar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. through two-week trial in District of Massachusetts.
