Robins Kaplan LLP is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Elliot Kaplan, a longtime named partner and cornerstone of the firm whose leadership and values helped shape Robins Kaplan for more than six decades.
Elliot joined the firm in 1960 as a law clerk while attending the University of Minnesota Law School and began practicing full time in 1961. Over the course of his career, he played a central role in building the firm’s identity as a trial law firm committed to preparation, ethics, and fairness, and to keeping the doors to justice open for those who needed it most.
Throughout his career, Elliot served in numerous leadership roles, including as Chairman of the firm from 1987 to 1995, Chair of the Business Litigation Department for more than two decades, a member of the Executive Board, and later as Chair Emeritus. He was instrumental in developing the firm’s business litigation practice into a defining strength and helped guide the firm through periods of growth and transition.
Elliot was widely respected for his trial skill and professional judgment, as well as for his long-standing client relationships. He was a central figure in the firm’s decades-long relationship with Best Buy, beginning when the company consisted of just a handful of stereo stores, and he helped secure significant recoveries in major antitrust matters. His work with national and international clients, including in antitrust and unfair competition matters, contributed to the firm’s reputation well beyond Minnesota.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Elliot earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1957 and his law degree with honors in 1961. He maintained a lifelong commitment to education and opportunity, serving the University and Law School in leadership roles, including leading a $55 million capital campaign and serving as Chair of the University of Minnesota Foundation. Along with his wife, Eloise, he established scholarship support for qualified minority law students, reflecting his belief that the legal profession should reflect the communities it serves.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Elliot was known for his humility, warmth, and quiet sense of humor. He cared deeply about education, family, and community, and he gave generously of his time and resources throughout his life.
“Elliot was one of the greatest contributors in building and developing our firm nationally,” said Anthony Froio, Chair of the Executive Board and Managing Partner of Robins Kaplan. “He was an incredible lawyer, mentor and friend, and always led by example. His values, judgment, and commitment to excellence continue to guide who we are today. His legacy will live with the firm forever.”
