Lisa Beane Named to Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40 List

Lisa Beane

Robins Kaplan LLP is pleased to announce that Lisa Beane has been named to the National LGBT Bar Association’s “Best LGBTQ+Lawyers Under 40” Class of 2019.  The list recognizes “LGBTQ legal professionals who have who have distinguished themselves in their field and have demonstrated a profound commitment to LGBTQ+ equality.”

Beane was honored for her ongoing efforts to recruit and connect LGBTQ firm members and promote an inclusive firm culture. As head of the firm’s LGBTQ Working Group, Lisa proactively led the drafting of a “Guidebook for Transgender Inclusion in the Workplace”—innovative guidelines that equip all firm employees with tools to promote inclusion. Lisa has also helped to organize the firm’s Pride Month celebrations, social events, and educational programming open to the public.

Outside of her official leadership role at the firm, Lisa has devoted her skills as a litigator to the cause of LGBT equality. She has represented transgender individuals in two separate cases alleging discrimination by health care providers.  One of those cases, Rumble v. Fairview Health Services and Emergency Physicians Group P.A., became one of the first in the nation to allege violations of Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which prohibits discrimination by health care providers on the basis of a patient’s race, disability, age, or sex. It raised the critical legal question, which had never before been tested in the courts, of whether the ACA’s ban on sex discrimination includes discrimination on the basis of transgender status. The case’s historic decision, which recognizes that Section 1557 protects transgender individuals, received national press coverage and was applauded by transgender and gay rights organizations nationwide.

Beane will be honored at a ceremony at the National LGBT Bar’s 2019 Lavender Law Conference and Career Fair in Philadelphia this August.
