William Manning

Bill Manning, a partner and trial lawyer at Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P., has just received the prestigious national award from BTI Consulting Group for outstanding client service. This award, The BTI  Client Service All-Stars, was extended to 11 intellectual property lawyers across the Country. The award is based on thorough and extensive research that BTI conducts from Fortune 500 companies to determine which lawyers, nationally, are delivering the best and highest level of client service.

Bill Manning has had a wide ranging civil litigation practice over the past 32 years. He is currently representing Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) in significant patent litigation involving processors and memory against Samsung in the Northern District of California.  The case has been ongoing for two years and is scheduled for trial in early January, 2011. Mr. Manning recently successfully defended AMD against alleged infringement by Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI) in the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

Mr. Manning is not new to patent litigation. He recovered 500 million dollars for a small Alabama computer company (Intergraph) against 20 different computer manufactures including Dell, Hewlett Packard, Gateway, Intel, Toshiba and AMD amongst others. He came to represent AMD as a result of being on the other side from them in the Intergraph litigation. It is now AMD that nominated Bill for the BTI All Stars Award for client service.

Bill states, "It is very gratifying to be nominated by any client, but it is particularly so when in the distant past, we were adverse to AMD for a brief period. The firm is gratified to represent AMD as it is a very dynamic company nationally and internationally. AMD makes the finest processors in the world and our firm is honored to represent AMD"

Additionally, Bill discussed the recent World Class Client Service Initiative (WCCS) that Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi's new Chairman, Marty Lueck, launched.  Bill stated, "this award is recognition that the new WCCS Program is definitely on the right track. We practice deep listening to make sure we are hearing exactly what is best for that particular client.  No two clients are the same and all clients have different nuanced business objectives. We strive to continually listen and then execute on the precisely defined client objectives."

Bill Manning represents numerous other corporate clients in a wide range of civil litigation matters. Among those clients are Honeywell, Inc. and The Toro Company. In addition to intellectual property and patent litigation, Bill represents corporations in products liability, alleged false advertising, securities litigation and class-action defense work. Bill has recently successfully resolved a number of class-action defense matters for Fortune 500 companies.

In addition to Bill's representation of corporations, in keeping with the strong tradition that is very much alive at the firm, Bill also represents seriously injured individuals. In that regard, he has obtained a 9 million dollar verdict for a young man who lost both his arms. This verdict was unanimously sustained by the Wisconsin Supreme Court. In addition, to other million dollar verdicts, Bill has obtained two eight figure settlements and numerous seven figure settlements on behalf of injured individuals in complex product liability cases. Bill states, "it is an absolute honor and privilege to stand in another's shoes and attempt to give them voice. It does not matter if the client is an individual or a corporation. They all deserve a lawyer who can listen deeply and allow them to be heard."

Bill Manning is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He is a Trustee of Hamline University where he inaugurated the Nelson Mandela Scholarship Fund for the Law School. He did do because as he states, "former President Mandela is the finest lawyer to have ever lived and he provides me inspiration daily to represent others".

When Bill was asked his concluding thoughts on receiving this Client Service All-Star Award, he stated, "there is a well-known and often used phrase historically in this firm - it is ‘no one accomplishes anything alone', I am extremely grateful to all the many team members I currently work with and that I have worked with in my years in the firm - together we deliver high quality work and this award recognizes all of us."

Being named to the list or receiving the award is not intended and should not be viewed as comparative to other lawyers or to create an expectation about results that might be achieved in a future matter.
