Elimination of Bias CLE
I A Reckoning with History: The Mapping Prejudice Project
1:45 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. CT

The Mapping Prejudice project began in 2016 as an experiment to identify and map racial covenants. These clauses were embedded into property deeds to bar people who were not white from buying or occupying the parcels of land to which they were attached.

Rooted in public history, Mapping Prejudice is a co-creative and community-powered project. Over nine thousand people have contributed to building these maps. The project has completed the Hennepin and Ramsey counties. In addition to completing Washington, Olmsted and Dakota counties in Minnesota, it has now turned its attention to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Washington D.C.

Gillette will illuminate how racial covenants laid a foundation for how housing policies and practices have been used to construct racial inequalities over the last century. She will share her family's story to illuminate how covenants worked and their impact on subsequent generations.

Moderated by Tim Billion, this panel will discuss the concept of wealth, including how people define "enough" and the non-monetary forms of wealth that people value or may overlook. We will also explore what causes conflicts, such as differing generational definitions of "wealth" and "enough," and how to navigate these issues. The session will address the critical legal, financial, and ethical considerations of managing and passing wealth across generations. We will also discuss the impact of historically excluded groups. Panelists to be announced soon.
