Update: DePuy Pinnacle Hip Implant Update

In addition to the ongoing litigation over its recalled ASR metal-on-metal hip, DePuy Orthopaedics faces additional lawsuits arising out of its Pinnacle® hip system. The DePuy Pinnacle® hip has multiple different liner options which allow for a number of different bearing-surface combinations: ceramic-on-polyethylene, metal-on-polyethylene, ceramic-on-ceramic, metal-on-metal or ceramic-on-metal. Lawsuits involving Pinnacle® implants claim that the implant caused injury, including early implant failure and metalosis.

Cases filed in federal court involving the DePuy Pinnacle® have been consolidated and centralized in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL) being heard in the Northern District of Texas. As of July 10, 2012, there were over 1,400 DePuy Pinnacle® hip lawsuits pending in this MDL. The first bellwether trial, which is like a test case, is expected to be tried before a jury in Fall 2014.
